Light Up Hats & Headpieces: A Beginner’s Guide to STEAM Fashion

 

Join us for a fun, hands-on workshop, no prior experience in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, or Math), sewing, or circuits is needed! You'll learn how to create simple circuits and turn them into wearable accessories like hats or headpieces. Circuits have been part of fashion for years—now it's your turn to add your own STEM Fashion electric twist as you design your own light-up creation!  This Pre-Conference Academy is designed to be fun, creative, and welcoming to all. Explore how playful design, fashion, and STEAM  go hand-in-hand.

All participants are encouraged to wear their electric hats to the Opening Poolside Welcome Reception on Tuesday evening.

BONUS:  If you are planning to attend the Homecoming Party on Wednesday evening, our theme this year is BOOST IN WONDERLAND (Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter theme) so your electric hat will be the perfect accessory for your costume. 

Materials are provided, but feel free to bring items to light up or personalize with your STEM Fashionista Mad Hatter flair. 

Learning Outcomes: 

1. Basic Circuitry Knowledge: Participants will learn the fundamentals of simple circuits and how to incorporate them into wearable designs, making STEM concepts approachable and hands-on.

2. Creative Application of STEM: Participants will apply Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) concepts in a fun, creative way, demonstrating how STEM can be integrated into everyday design and fashion.

 

3. Breaking Down Barriers and Building Confidence: By creating an inclusive and accessible environment, the workshop will break down barriers to STEM participation, increasing participants' confidence in exploring new skills and expressing creativity through STEM fashion.

 

Nancy is the founder of SciComm Solutions, specializing in science communication, media production, and STEM education. With over 24 years of experience, she empowers learners through engaging, hands-on training across hundreds of organizations nationwide. A former PBS/NPR affiliate producer, Nancy has created impactful science content for the public and classrooms. An award-winning science journalist and national STEM fashion design contest winner, she teaches science communication at universities across the world. Nancy believes in the power of trust partnership to strengthen collective impact in STEM education.
