INSPIRE LEARNING
After School Content Literacy Project for California
Dr. Douglas Fisher, Professor, San Diego State University; Dr. Nancy Frey, Associate Professor, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA

All staff members involved in after school programs can have a positive impact on students' academic achievement and literacy development.  This interactive session will focus on specific research-based strategies that are immediately useful during homework assistance time and enrichment activities, including read alouds/think alouds, writing to learn, and graphic organizers.

A statewide initiative, the After School Literacy Project for California holds important promise to strengthen supplemental support services for students in California after school programs. This project is a partnership of The After School Partnerships Office (ASPO) of the California Department of Education (CDE); San Diego State University Research Foundation; and The Region 9 Technical Assistance Center for After School Programs, San Diego County Office of Education.

This initiative is in alignment with the CCSESA document, System Change for Language Arts: A County Course of Study, in its focus on creating system-wide literacy programs.  Most of the strategies were drawn from the handbook, Strategic Teaching and Learning, Standards-Based Instruction to Promote Content Literacy in Grades 4-12 (CDE, 2000).  All participants will receive a copy of the training materials.
