Maximizing Student Strengths in Out-of-School Time
Using the Gallup StrengthsFinder with Students and Program Staff
JerLene Mosley, Senior Education Consultant, Gallup, Omaha, NE

Do you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day?

Chances are, you don't, and neither do many students. All too often, our natural strengths go untapped because we devote more time to fixing our shortcomings than to developing our strengths.

Everyone has a unique combination of innate strengths, and when people understand and apply their top strengths, the effect on their lives is profound.

Out-of-school time activities afford important opportunities for students to figure out what they do best, identify and develop their strengths, and learn to appreciate the strengths and contributions of others in service to themselves and their communities.

The sooner students learn more about themselves and what they do best, the more prepared they will be to use their strengths to inform their personal growth and to meet their full potential.

Findings from the Gallup Student Poll (which provides insights into how students experience their lives in and out of school) show clearly that getting to do what they do best every day at school is linked to positive outcomes for students.

These students are:

1·1.6x more likely to be engaged at school

1·7x more likely to be hopeful for the future

1·2.1x more likely to say they get excellent grades

1·2.1x more likely to say they do well at school

Join us to learn about the Strengths Movement for K12 students - an approach that is helping thousands of students to discover and develop their top 3-5 strengths for greater academic, career, and personal success.

First, you will discover your own talents and strengths with a Focus on You. We will examine why you are who you are, and how you can put your strengths to work for yourself. You will be given access to take Gallup’s Clifton StrengthsFinder to show you how you are special and how to succeed by turning your talents into strengths.

Then, you will discover tools and resources to support strengths-based student coaching and development for your out of school program, enabling students – and those who work with them – to do what they do best every day.
